Big Trucks, OTR, Construction Equipment

email the content item print the content item create pdf file of the content item
This is a very different application category than most others that we deal with. LARGE sump capacities mean very expensive oil changes. High mileage and/or excessive idling mean high fuel usage. Excessive idling can also mean HEAVY soot build-up. Dusty conditions for construction equipment can mean incredible amounts of contaminant build-up in the oil - leading to excessive engine wear and quick air and oil filter saturation.

Moreover, time is money with these vehicles. Any time spent in the shop for repairs or fluid changes is time NOT spent on the road or on site making money. So, not only must the cost of the actual maintenance and repair be considered, but also the lost productivity from having vehicles and equipment in the shop for repairs and maintenance services.

Of course, the incredibly high cost for repair and/or replacement of mechanical components on these large vehicles cannot be overlooked. Lost productivity MAY be the more costly aspect of these repairs, but the actual maintenance costs are also a huge factor.

It seems clear that the case can easily be made for use of high quality synthetic oils and high efficiency filtration - without me ever saying a word. If ever there was a case where paying the premium for an oil and/or filter was justified, this is it!

How can AMSOIL Help?

Well, let's break it down and discuss how AMSOIL can assist you in addressing each of the issues mentioned above.

Longer Drain Intervals Mean More Time on the Job

First, AMSOIL can easily assist you in significantly reducing the cost of oil changes on your big rigs and equipment. On most 2006 and older diesels which are in good mechanical condition, you should anticipate getting AT LEAST 30,000 to 60,000 mile drain intervals with AMSOIL* as compared to an average of 10,000 to 20,000 miles with petroleum lubes (not accounting for the possibility of utilizing a bypass oil filtration system, which would extend drains even further). Moreover, you should anticipate using much less top-off oil between oil changes since AMSOIL is so much less volatile (less prone to burn-off) than petroleum lubes (and even competing synthetics).

As an example of the capability of the AMSOIL product to stand up to significantly extended oil drains as compared to petroleum oils, consider the following testimonial:

Dan Clements of Delaware services and repairs over-the-road trucks, some using AMSOIL, others using non-synthetics. "Trucks with AMSOIL have the oil changed at 50,000 miles, with filter changes at 10,000 miles. Trucks using non-synthetic have the oil changed at 10,000 miles. Oil analysis is done on each truck at each oil change. The trucks using AMSOIL consistently show lower wear metals, despite the fact that the oil is in service five times longer than the non-synthetics. I have never had a 50,000 mile analysis of AMSOIL that was negative. The results leave no room for doubt."

Dan knows that oil analysis is the best means of establishing oil drain intervals, but, assuming that you were to see results even half as good as what Mr. Clements has seen, and accounting for the cost of labor for your oil changes (you can crunch the numbers later and see if I'm right), with AMSOIL, your truck will be in the shop less than half the time for oil changes while each change will probably cost you about double what you pay now.

At worst, you break even on oil change costs while being able to keep your truck on the road. Of course, we both know that, with these big trucks and equipment, time on the road or on site is money in the bank. Time in the shop is money in someone else's bank. AMSOIL means more money in your pocket.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that you're getting all the additional benefits of a full synthetic as well.

Fuel Economy: The Deal MAKER

Obviously, whether you're putting 150,000 miles on an OTR truck or idling/running construction equipment for 12 hours every day, fuel economy is a huge issue. And, the more trucks/pieces of equipment you have running, the bigger the savings to your company even if you can increase your fuel economy by just a small percentage.

In fact, on the average, fuel accounts for roughly 37 percent of Class 8 truck operating expenses, and reducing fuel expenses is a top priority for truck operators. Moreover, although fuel expenses may not account for that same level of expense for construction equipment, it is still a considerable expense, and worth reducing, if at all possible.

AMSOIL is the leader in the race to develop fuel efficient low-viscosity lubricants for trucking and other heavy-duty diesel applications. Independent laboratory testing shows AMSOIL Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil in the engine and AMSOIL synthetics in the drivetrain provide up to 8.2 percent more miles-per-gallon than other popular lubricants provide.

For a fleet of only 100 trucks driving a typical 120,000 miles per year, an 8.2% savings would be immense. Most class 8 trucks are lucky to get 7 mpg. Average is probably more like 5 or 6. So, to drive 12,000,000 (120,000 miles x 100 trucks) at 6.5 mpg would take about 1.85 million gallons of fuel (and 6.5 mpg is being generous). Even at $2 per gallon, that's about 3.7 million dollars per year just on fuel. So, an 8.2% improvement would amount to over $300,000 saved annually just on fuel.

If you happen to be the supervisor who decided to make the switch to AMSOIL, you just became a hero.

Soot - The Oil AND Engine Killer

Anyone who deals with diesel engines on a regular basis knows that soot build-up in the oil is a critical issue affecting not only oil life, but also engine life. Leaving heavily soot contaminated oil in the engine for too long can spell big problems down the road. AMSOIL has you covered here too.

First of all, all AMSOIL diesel oils have a tremendous ability to keep soot "contained" so that it does as little damage as possible, not only to the quality of the oil itself, but also to the engine. You won't find a better oil for handling soot loading. And, with the introduction of EGR engines (especially the 2007+ engines), soot levels are only climbing, which is shortening oil life (even for high quality oils like AMSOIL) AND engine life.

The good news is that AMSOIL is now offering bypass oil filtration capable of removing even the smallest particulate, including a significant level of soot. This filtration system will remove 98.7% of ALL particulate 2 microns and larger. In addition, it will remove 39% of soot contaminant LESS than 1 micron.

These are incredibly efficient filtration systems that will easily keep your oil in service for 100 - 200,000 plus miles (based upon oil analysis findings). The best part, these systems are very easy to install on large trucks (most of which are already designed with oil ports to "plug into". For a cost of under $300 - $400(including labor), one of these systems can be installed on just about any large sump diesel engine.

When used in conjunction with AMSOIL synthetic oil, expect our bypass filter elements to run 60,000 miles (or two years) between changes at a cost of approximately $25-$30 each, depending upon volume and the type of account you have.

For EGR engines, these bypass systems are an absolute must. You HAVE to get that soot out of your oil if you really want to get good life from the engine or the oil. There really is no other way to effectively do that. With AMSOIL, we don't just give you the right oil for the job, we also make sure you've got the best filtration money can buy, so that oil stays cleaner, longer.

There is no question that use of AMSOIL synthetic oils and an AMSOIL bypass filtration system will significantly improve component protection, thereby greatly extending the time between overhaul and/or replacement of your vehicles and equipment. With the cost associated with such repair and/or replacement, fuel savings are only the beginning. You save all the way around with AMSOIL.

The Bottom Line

In the end, it all boils down to this. AMSOIL is a PROVEN product (over 30+ years) that offers you extended time between oil changes, meaning more time on the road and less money spent on oil, improved protection, meaning less down-time and fewer unnecessary costly repair expenditures, longer equipment life, resulting in lower equipment replacement costs and well established fuel economy improvements.

It's a win-win-win. Nobody loses with AMSOIL. NOBODY!
