Mobil 1 Extended Performance vs. AMSOIL

Ok, the numbers are in. Mobil 1 STILL doesn't hold a candle to AMSOIL (even with their new Extended Performance product). In testing done August of 2005 against 10 brand name petroleum and synthetic oils, AMSOIL came out the clear winner, even over the new and "amaaaaazing" Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil. You can see the report for yourself in a moment, but here are some highlights:

  • Mobil 1 EP Evaporates 38% Faster Than AMSOIL
  • Mobil 1 EP Allows 18% More Cold Start Friction
  • Mobil 1 EP Allows 22% MORE Wear

In addition, on the TFOUT test, the "Thin Film Oxygen Uptake Test" (ASTM D-4742), which provides a very good correlation to the drain interval capability of an oil, AMSOIL passed the 500 minute cut-off mark with flying colors, while Mobil 1 Extended Performance fell short at only 469 minutes. Now, 469 minutes is significantly better than most of the competing oils, so you've got to give Mobil some credit. But, the AMSOIL product could easily have continued longer. Nevertheless, since the test parameters limit the test run time to 500 minutes, we were cut short of finding out just exactly how far the oil could really go.

Either way, it really doesn't matter. AMSOIL offers considerably better wear protection, easier cold starting, less high temperature evaporation and longer guaranteed drain intervals. Moreover, at Preferred Customer pricing, you'll pay about the same for AMSOIL (including shipping) than you'll pay for Mobil 1 Extended Performance off the shelf.

So, let's see ... same price, better protection, easier cold starts, less evaporation, longer drain intervals. Boy, that's a tough one ... I'll have to think about that for a little while. I think I'll take the Mobil 1 ------------------ NOT!!!

Four Ball Wear Scar Testing
The Smaller the Wear Scar, The Better the Protection!

Amsoil - Four Ball Wear Scar Test
Wear Scar Diameter Listed in Millimeters
Four Ball Wear Test (ASTM D4172), 40kg pressure, 150°C, 1800 RPM, for 1 hour duration
As tested by an Independent Lab in 2003

The Above Results Can be Seen on EVERY bottle of AMSOIL S2000 0w30 Motor Oil

As you can see in the chart above, Mobil 1, the most recognized synthetic oil in the world, doesn't hold a candle to the AMSOIL Series 2000 0w30 motor oil for wear protection. In fact, an apples to apples comparison of Mobil 1 0w30 to AMSOIL S2000 0w30 shows that the Mobil 1 product allows 5 times more wear on the four ball test. 5 Times!!!

AMSOIL is obviously the clear winner here. If you're looking for the best engine protection money can buy, and you don't mind getting a guaranteed 35,000 mile or one year oil drain interval to boot, AMSOIL Series 2000 0w30 is the way to go, without question. It is the BEST synthetic oil available on the market today.

So What, Everyone Claims They're the Best

You are absolutely right. It seems that every day there is a new synthetic oil or oil additive manufacturer claiming that they have the best product for your vehicle. It's in their best interests to do so. It's in AMSOIL's best interests to do so.

They claim reduced engine wear, better fuel economy, more horsepower. But who do you trust? How do you know who's really the best?

It's easy. Just look for the oil that's got the tests to prove it. AMSOIL comes out on top of every oil and oil additive available on the market today, and AMSOIL is not afraid to post those test results right on their labels. There simply is no better oil on the market, and this website is designed to prove that to you beyond a shadow of a doubt. Keep reading.

Technical Comparisons to All Popular Oils

Not sure you believe me? Well, that's ok. You don't have to. The oil companies themselves indicate quite clearly who the better oil is on every one of their technical data sheets. Just check the chart at the link below in PDF format. It is a compilation of all of the latest specs for just about every motor oil manufacturer on the planet. See how AMSOIL stacks up.

You'll find that AMSOIL comes out smelling like a rose in pretty much every viscosity grade that we offer. And those oils that really do compete with us for quality are generally far more expensive, especially when compared to our Preferred Customer prices.

See for yourself. All the data is taken directly from each oil company's own literature. Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, AMSOIL is the best option out there for protecting your vehicle. Once you compare the specs and compare the prices, you'll agree that there simply isn't a better oil out there for the money. Go with the Best ... AMSOIL.

Technical Comparison Charts

Nothing Outperforms Mobil 1? Wrong!!

Just compare the technical specifications. We've got the data on the new Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5w30 and we've compared it to AMSOIL 5w30. Guess who comes out on top in every category? You guessed it ... AMSOIL!

According to the ASTM D4172 Four Ball Wear Test, Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5w30 allows 50% more wear than AMSOIL 5w30. 50%! What about NOACK volatility (the measure of an oil's rate of consumption under high heat/stress conditions)? Mobil 1 consumes at a rate nearly double that of AMSOIL. And how about TBN (Total Base Number - the measure of an oil's ability to neutralize acid build-up and corrosion)? AMSOIL has a TBN value nearly 50% higher than Mobil 1.

Of course, there are other areas where AMSOIL comes out on top as well such as a viscosity index score that is 12 points higher than the Mobil 1 product which isn't even on the charts (we didn't want to beat up on them too badly). Why don't you take a look at the charts for yourself?

BETTER ON PRICE TOO

Yes, that's right, better on price. Consider this. AMSOIL Preferred Customers can get AMSOIL 100% synthetic 5w30 motor oil for under $4.50 per quart. Often, unless you find a sale, Mobil 1 synthetic oil costs as much or more, and Mobil 1 doesn't even recommend or guarantee extended oil drains. AMSOIL offers guaranteed 25,000 mile oil changes and costs no more (and sometimes less) than Mobil 1.

You just can't beat AMSOIL, for performance or price.

What About Oil Additives Like Slick 50 or Prolong?

The informercials you see would have you believe that by putting these products in your engine it will become a "super engine" of sorts. Even better than if it were running a synthetic oil like AMSOIL. However, unfortunately for consumers, their claims have no basis in reality.

In fact, here are a few links to releases from the Federal Trade Commission with regard to the effectiveness of different oil additives. Each link opens in a new window. When finished reading each piece, simply close the window to return to this tour.

Valvoline Engine Treatment
Slick 50 Engine Treatment
STP Engine Treatment
Dura Lube Super Engine Treatment
Dura Lube Advanced Engine Treatment
Motor Up Engine Treatment
Prolong Super Lubricants

In short, the FTC releases above indicate that all of these companies have used deceptive advertising in order to mislead consumers into believing that their products offer advanced engine protection and performance over motor oil alone.

The truth is that not one of these companies has been able to offer any test results which prove conclusively that any benefit is gained from their products' use. AMSOIL, on the other hand, has 3 decades of test results and testimonials proving that their oils do exactly what the company says they do.

For more information about oil additives, see the following link: Oil Additives or Snakoil Additives?.

Why AMSOIL & Not a Brand Name Oil?

First off, although there are a number of good oils on the market today, there are at least a few companies whose integrity should be looked upon as somewhat questionable. Specifically, when companies such as Valvoline and Quaker State (Quaker State is the manufacturer of Slick 50 Engine Treatment) utilize such deceptive advertising in regards to their oil additive products, how much weight can you put on advertisements for their oils?

Besides, I'd say the proof is in the test results. At the top of the page you see an industry standard test called the "Four Ball Wear Test" which compares AMSOIL to a number of other oils on the market. This test is used by the lubricants industry to establish comparative wear rates of different oils at a specific pressure, temperature and RPM. It uses four ball bearings, three stationary and one that is rotated.

The lubricant being tested is used to coat these ball bearings. At the end of the test, the bearings that were stationary are studied to determine the size of the wear scars that were left by the test. The wear scars for the three bearings are then averaged. Of course, the smaller the wear scar, the better the protection.

As we discussed above, the other oils tested, including Mobil 1 SuperSyn allowed MUCH more wear to occur on the four ball test.

Wear scar testing has been done on other viscosity grades as well with AMSOIL coming out on top every time. You can take a look at those tests, including previous tests done on the 0w30 against the Mobil 1 TriSynthetic product by clicking here

How Do I Know The Test Results Are Valid?

AMSOIL runs hundreds of "in-house" tests to determine how their oils compare to others in the industry. Then they request independent labs to perform the tests again in order to verify the results by a third party.

Nevertheless, that may not mean much to you. You might, however, find it interesting to note that, as I briefly mentioned above, AMSOIL posts the results of the Four Ball Wear Test above on the label of every bottle of Series 2000 20W-50 they produce.

The question is, if the results had been falsified or tampered with in any way, wouldn't someone be taking AMSOIL to court? Wouldn't Mobil 1 be suing the AMSOIL company for everything they're worth? I believe they would. In fact, just last year Mobil took Castrol to court over statements made by the Castrol company regarding the enhanced engine wear properties of Castrol oil.

Interestingly enough, however, not one company is suing AMSOIL over those test results. Doesn't that say something about their validity? What about the fact that the FTC is tearing into oil additive manufacturers left and right regarding their bogus claims of enhanced engine protection, but hasn't said a word about the claims made by the AMSOIL company.

AMSOIL Trademarked "First in Synthetics"

Here's another interesting tid-bit. Albert J. Amatuzio, President and CEO of AMSOIL, Inc., announced a while back that the phrase "First in Synthetics" is now part of the AMSOIL registered trademark. No other oil manufacturer can claim to be first.

Mr. Amatuzio told an interesting story as to how this came about. AMSOIL applied to have this statement registered and was told that they must prove to the trademark officials, by documentation, that AMSOIL Synthetic Oil was first, historically. However, they also said that by claiming to be first, AMSOIL was insinuating they were the best (or #1/first) from a quality or performance standpoint.

So AMSOIL had to convince them that they had the best product to also claim to be first. AMSOIL proceeded to present comparison documentation and test results backing up the claim that AMSOIL was also the best. YES! THE TRADEMARK OFFICIALS ACCEPTED THE DOCUMENTATION to allow AMSOIL to use "first" in their trademark.

But the process was not through. The procedure now required the government to notify all the other oil manufacturers that would be impacted by this decision, so they would have input before this decision would be official. They were notified in writing and given 90 days to object, comment or respond. The ninety days elapsed without a peep!

AMSOIL not only convinced the trademark office that AMSOIL Synthetic Oil was first historically, but also convinced them that AMSOIL is the first in quality, and no other competitor objected!
